Start with the paint you have
Film goes on over the paint exactly as it is. Swirls, scratches and old touch-ups under the film generally stay visible, so on an older car the condition of the finish decides what happens before any film is cut.
Paint correction before film is common practice. The aim is to put the film over a better finish than the one the car arrived with, not to seal in the current one. How much correction a car needs is something to settle at the assessment, before anyone talks about coverage.

Original vs repainted finishes
Original and repainted paint aren’t the same surface for film. Film makers write their application guidance around fully cured factory paint. A fresh repaint has to cure completely before film goes on, and clean removal from non-factory paint is less predictable than from factory paint.
If any panels have been repainted, say so when you ask for a quote, and roughly when the work was done. That shapes whether film suits those panels and how they should be handled.
How much coverage a classic needs
A car that comes out for weekend drives sees far fewer highway miles than a daily driver. For that kind of use, a front-end clear bra covers the panels that face the road. Full body PPF makes more sense if you want every panel under film while the paint is in the condition you like.
Also ask how the film will be cut. Pre-cut kits are made from vehicle-specific patterns, and film can also be cut and fitted from bulk. Which approach your car needs depends on the car.
Care for a protected classic
Care is regular washing, no harsh chemicals and proper wash mitts. Keep pressure washers away from film edges, since high-pressure water can lift an edge.

A ceramic coating adds slickness and makes washing easier on the panels the film doesn’t cover. It’s a far thinner layer than film, so it doesn’t stop rock chips. Ask about it at the same paint assessment, since both go on over the finish the car has.
